O Greenpeace resolveu investigar uma denúncia de que um centro de reciclagem em Hampshire não seguia as normas europeias, as quais só permitem a exportação de equipamentos que funcionam. Ao invés de processar o lixo eletrônico, esse centro o estava contrabandeando para a um mercado miserável em Lagos. Para provar, enviaram ao lugar uma TV quebrada, com o detalhe de que ela foi previamente equipada com um dispositivo de rastreamento por rádio e celular. A partir daí, a organização brincou de detetive e seguiu a TV que enviava um sinal indicando sua posição. Partindo de Hampshire, a primeira parada foi em Londres, onde o aparelho foi embarcado em um navio. De lá, seguiu para o oeste da África parando em vários outros portos até o container onde estava a TV ser descarregado em Tin Can Island (algo como ilha da lata de folha de flandres), um local que recebe enormes carregamentos desse tipo, que fica em Lagos, capital da Nigéria. Finalmente, terminou em um mercado popular da periferia, onde o time do Greenpeace a localizou e recomprou, completando a missão. A instalação do transmissor e os lugares por onde a TV passou foram fotografados e a história toda é narrada no vídeo abaixo (em inglês). Triste.
A forma como a prova foi produzida é excelente, mas o enredo do filme é velho. Os eletrônicos quebrados dos ricos acabam nos lugares mais carentes do mundo para evitar ou reduzir os custos de reciclagem. Se fosse só uma busca por mão-de-obra mais barata não seria diferente de produzir roupas ou tênis em países como o Vietnã ou a China. Mas aqui estamos tratando de componentes tóxicos e lugares que não tem o menor controle sobre como são desmontados ou descartados. Metais pesados jogados em um lixão acabam atingindo o lençol freático e envenenando a água e o solo. Fazer uma fogueirinha para derreter o ouro dos circuitos, prática simples e comum, provoca câncer e outros males nos trabalhadores pobres que se dispõem a realizar essa função.
